WHY UV?

LESCO's UV technology is simultaneously environmentally responsible and economically advantageous.

First introduced in the late 1960's, this innovative process instantly solidifies coatings, inks, and adhesives with a cool, clean beam of light. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) found in the noxious, flammable solvents used by conventional coatings, adhesives and inks are completely eliminated.

The ultraviolet (UV) curing process featured by LESCO is a photochemical reaction where free flowing molecules, excited by UV radiation, link to form solid polymer chains. Small amounts of chemicals known as "Photoinitiators" act as catalysts, allowing the UV-curable adhesives & coatings to remain liquid, then instantly solidify or "cure" the material the split second UV light hits them.

IT'S CLEAN
UV curing involves 100 percent solids in a fluid state, with no hazardous substances released during the cure process. The bottom line: the amount of liquid applied before the curing process is the same amount remaining after the curing is complete. No leftovers, no VOC emissions, no compliance problems!

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave UV curing its official "Thumbs up" in a 1994 report, citing its "...Elimination of solvent use, absence of VOC emissions, very rapid curing, higher productivity and lower energy use." Last summer, the SCAQMD also endorsed the technology offering dollar-for-dollar installation incentives as well as expedited permitting.

LESCO's UV's ultra pure curing process and low temperatures make UV curing ideal for semiconductor or medical component clean room assembly and electronics manufacturing. Class 10 cleanroom operation and near zero ESD/outgassing is achievable, as are Class VI Medical/FDA requirements.

IT'S FAST
Near Instantaneous solidification dramatically increases productivity and opens up manufacturing capabilities not previously possible. LESCO coatings and adhesives solidify in just seconds in most cases, eliminating the time wasted waiting for epoxies, silicones, clear coats and inks to dry. LESCO UV systems allow you to test assemblies and conduct quality control immediately during manufacturing. Our one part polymer chemistry also saves time, since it requires no mixing or preparation.

LESCO's Multi-Cure systems, designed for heat-sensitive substrates, speed production of delicate print images on sophisticated printed circuit boards, and produces a superior product.

Delicate tacking on sensitive assemblies goes faster and smoother with UV adhesives. LESCO designs and builds the custom systems that semi-automate many instant bonding processes, such as for head stacks in disk drives.

IT'S VERSATILE
It's hard to imagine a manufacturing or industrial process that couldn't benefit from using LESCO UV Systems. Thousands of UV-cured products are used by millions of people every day.

Containers take on a new dimension when inks and laminates are cured using LESCO photo reactive chemicals and UV lamps - INSTANTLY!

LESCO's Speed-Pak Systems enable your products to stand out in their clear clamshell packaging, made possible with fast UV adhesives.

LESCO UV Systems improve almost any process, from instant-drying road markings to coating advanced composites for improved communications from space. What LESCO can do for you is limited only by your imagination. A small sampling of some proven LESCO applications follows this section.

IT'S TOUGH
The use of LESCO UV light Systems to polymerize our photo-reactive chemicals onto a substrate results in an amazingly hard coating almost impervious to scratches. Virtually any surface that is susceptible to scratches and abrasions is a candidate for LESCO UV curing. Eyeglasses, furniture, appliances, automotive parts, and sporting gear are all made more durable and attractive through UV curing.

F-16 canopies have a solar protective interior, which is coated then cured with UV light. As a result, they are scratch, solvent and chemical resistant. Many aerospace firms turn to LESCO to make optics clearly durable.

Only LESCO designs and manufactures a broad selection of equipment, coating, adhesives and inks with a variety of properties to fill your exact manufacturing needs. Take a tour of the Products section of our web site for a brief description of some of these unique products.

MAXMAX

The LESCO MAX is a revolutionary approach to UV spot curing. It offers to the process engineer the greatest control and monitoring from both local and remote monitoring locations. Featuring a membrane front panel and a powerful RS485 serial interface, it allows access to every parameter of the process from the shop floor or the supervisor's desk. Its powerful but user friendly DataMax software creates records of every cure cycle, keeping them in its built-in memory until downloaded and reset. Simple alphanumeric commands add to the ultra flexible serial interface capabilities. And MAX's proprietary Optical Feedback system insures uniform output irradiance and optimal process validation.

Very importantly, MAX features the industry-leading LESCO bulb warranty of 1,000 hours useful life, leaving the competition even further behind while achieving unprecedented levels of intensity. Others may market 2,000 hrs or 3,000 hrs "life", but their bulb intensities at these times are so low as to make them useless for high intensity applications. Essentially, they only guaranty that the bulb will light - kind of like trying to read a book with your light's dimmer switch at the low position - it's on but practically useless. The MAX Spot Cure system is the ultimate UV Curing production tool, uniquely guaranteed to provide 50% of full initial rated intensity at 1000 hours bulb life. (See Warranty Information sheet for full details.) The MAX HP features an even more powerful 200 Watt bulb that makes this system the most powerful spot cure available at any price. Be sure to specify only LESCO FibreFire Hi Intensity lightguides when ordering.

multicureMulticure

The MULTICURE UV conveyor system was designed to cure substrates that are very heat sensitive but require large dosages of ultraviolet energy to cross link the UV chemistry. It is available in standard curing widths with Fusion elctrodeless or conventional mercury arc lamp technology, As the parts move along the conveyor the UV light source is "shuttled" over the substrate with alternate exposure and cool down cycles. The final result is that the substrate receives more UV energy with a reduction in peak temperature when compared to conventional conveyor processes. The MULTICURE is also a proven solution for UV conformal coating of heat sensitive circuit boards. With the ability to edge handle PCBs and provide digital speed readout, the MULTICURE can be integrated into your existing production line. LESCO's MULTICURE UV addresses a wide range of heat sensitive applications. Silicone potting, sealing & gasketing, a variety of medical, opthalmic and orthodontic plastic bonding & sealing, and thin film/sensitive substrates all benefit from the process of Multicuring.

LMC

LESCO's LMC Series is a family of user-configurable custom conveyor curing systems for edge handling applications such as PCB and similar conformal coating curing. The most popular base model in the series, the LMC-100, employs LESCO's proprietary "MultiCure" reciprocating lamp technology for control of unwanted thermal rise. All LMC's are designed to achieve a high level of flexibility in handling parts of varying widths and heights, as well as varying throughput speeds and staging, lamp types and power densities. The systems can be manufactured or (future) upgraded with two or even three stage UV and IR cure stations. For example, an existing LESCO LMC with solitary FUSION UV cure capability, might be modified later with an IR pre-treat station to meet process air entrainment changes. Or UV cure lamps might be modified to change irradiance spectrum to better match a new coating. More evidence that LESCO is the unchallenged industry leader is custom built curing solutions!
